The dedication that this man has shown by looking after abandoned animals is amazing! He puts his own health and life at risk in order to be there for animals in this abandoned town.
The Fukushima Disaster
The reason for the town being abandoned is because of radiation. The town of Tomioka is in Japan and right in the middle of the Fukushima disaster. When the leak happened the people living there fled as quickly as they could, leaving their pets and animals behind. The people were in such a rush to get out of the 12, 5 mile exclusion zone that they left their front doors right open.
Naoto Matsumura
The 55-year-old Naoto Matsumura is the last living person in the town. He has taken over the role of caring for the abandoned animals as he waits for people to come back again. This brave man lives by candlelight, surrounded by animals! Naoto checks in on and feeds dogs, cats, cows, pigs and more and he has been given the title “guardian of Fukushima’s animals”.
Naoto risks his health by staying in the town; although he eats food grown outside of the town, he is still exposed to the radiation every day. Because of selfless people like him, the animals in this town have a chance at a happy life. Have a look at the photos of Naoto feeding his animals!
