Every year, World Bee Day is celebrated on May 20th, and our friends, the bees, really deserve to be honored on that special day! Bees are incredibly important for our survival!

We depend on bees for our survival and they are a key element of biological diversity! They truly deserve to be celebrated and appreciated!

These insects have existed for over 100 million years!

Did you know that the bee is one of the oldest insects in the world? They have existed for over 100 million years. However, it wasn't until 9,000 years ago that people started to understand that they could breed them and use their honey.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, bees are essential, and at least a third of the world's crops depend on them (i.e. $200 billion).

Bees have numerous qualities!

That's not all though! Bees are incredible insects that have numerous qualities.

For example, bees have excellent flying and organizational skills. While this tiny insect weighs just 80 milligrams, they are capable of carrying their own weight in pollen and nectar! If that wasn't enough, they can also fly in place with 200 wingbeats per second. That's truly incredible!

In addition, they have a social life and their communication abilities are fascinating. Did you know that bees dance to communicate?

To be more precise, a bee can use three different dances to let other bees know where the best places to forage are. The first dance, when in a hurry, is the “round” dance, which indicates that it is a nearby spot. The second dance is called the “sickle dance”. This dance is used to indicate the direction of the location, thanks in particular to an axis with the sun. The last is the “wriggling” dance. This dance is used to indicate the exact distance from the spot to be foraged.

Furthermore, bees are able to evaluate the richness of the sources. The quality of this is indicated by the length of their dance and the vigor that is evaluated by the wriggle.

Don't forget this famous sentence from Albert Einstein: "If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would have only four years of life left." Therefore, it is necessary to protect them and notably from pesticides.

Did you know that a spoon of honey is equivalent to a lifetime's work for three small bees, and requires the visit of 120,000 flowers.
