Faced with a horrible reality when her owner died, Regan insisted her foster mum hold hands with her on the drive home.

How Regan the Golden Retriever found herself in a rescue home

Sad, stressed, and confused. These were some of the emotions Regan the Golden Retriever was feeling following the death of her owner. Not only would she have to survive her grief, but who’d look after her now?

All alone, Regan found herself at Goofy Foot Dog Rescue in Tennessee. With her loving parent now gone, and scared of where she found herself, Goofy Foot Dog Rescue founder Kim Mozena Rezac couldn’t help but feel sad for poor Regan.

So, during Regan’s three-day stay at Goofy Foot, Kim went about building trust and developing a relationship with Regan.

“You could tell she was scared and afraid. I would go in and give her treats and sit with her and talk,” Kim told TODAY.

"She was in our shelter for a couple days and I felt sorry for her so I brought her home."

Regan insists she hold hands with her foster mum

It was the car ride home to Kim’s place that showed the true loving side to this grief-stricken pooch. It also made her a much-loved internet sensation.

Sitting in the passenger seat next to Kim, Regan extended her paw so that she could “hold hands” with her recently acquainted friend. In fact, she insisted on it!

"She was so nervous and scared in the shelter but as soon as she jumped into my car she seemed so grateful,” Kim said. “She wanted to hold my hand the whole way. If I took it away she would paw at it.”

"I think she felt secure in touching someone familiar.”

All she wanted to do was hold hands. Now Regan can do that forever

Kim was able to take video footage of the special moment with Regan, which has since been seen more than 3.4 million times on Kim’s personal Facebook page, and countless other times via the news and through re-posts.

Thanks to the media frenzy, it has since been reported that Regan has found her new forever home with a family Kim says was “meant to have her”.

Although, we’re sure Kim will always be a forever friend in loving Regan’s heart.
