According to two French studies published January 7, 2014 in the Weekly Epidemiological Bulletin ( BEH ), it would be dangerous to expose children under 5 years to tarantulas, reptiles, monkeys or rats.

Indeed, children could get salmonellosis, a contamination characterized by diarrhea and high fever. These pets can also cause other infections such as meningitis. The transmission is mostly indirect, for example by touching the animal.

To cope with these risks, several countries like the United States have implemented control measures and safety for those who would like to acquire an exotic pet. They even discourage families with a child under 5 years to buy reptiles.

So beware, all that is small is not necessarily cute and can sometimes be very dangerous!
