Thomas Dambo is a street artist and designer living in Copenhagen, Denmark. He has set up a project that both helps birds and promotes positive street art.
Happy City Birds
According to his website, Happy City Birds is an ongoing project from Dambo, that has seen the creation and installation of more than 3,500 birdhouses.
The little structures are made from recycled materials and scrap wood, which are then painted and installed by either himself or his crew in a variety of playful and innovative ways.
Works include murals, structures, art installations, and even a giant birdhouse that Dambo could fit inside!
Convincing the locals
On Facebook, the artist regularly posts about his work. In one rather hilarious piece, he describes an encounter with a local resident during one of his Happy City Bird projects. The idea was to put up custom-designed camouflage birdhouses, creating safe little homes that are virtually invisible. Rambo offered them for free to local residents.
Rather than show initial enthusiasm for the project, one passerby thought that it was an elaborate scam to find out the addresses of people who were not home. He told Dambo:
“You are one sneaky scam artist, it only took you a couple of questions to find out where I live and that I’m out driving, so now you can just go rob all my stuff”.
It would seem however that the individual in question had a serious change of heart. After walking away annoyed, he came back the next day and said he’d changed his mind; he did want a bird box after all!
Dambo’s eco-conscious art helps the environment, the local bird population, and puts smiles on people’s faces! Just look at these photos of his work.
