Although both cats and dogs live on land and can both be domesticated, dogs have a lot more in common with marine mammals than with their furry enemies.

The canine race shares many characteristics with seals, for example, principally because both are considered Caniformia or Canoidea (literally "dog-like") and belong to the same branch of carnivores (as opposed to cats who are Feliformia).

This genetic link explains why seals are sometimes known as 'dogs of the sea'.
