When looking to get a new pet, most of us would choose a dog, cat, bird, a fish or maybe a hamster. There are others though who like to be a little more adventurous in their choices.

The Capybara

Have you ever heard of the Capybara? This rodent comes from South America and is in fact the largest rodent in the world. Fully grown, it reaches about 1.2 m and can weigh up to 45 kg. The most well-known Capybara is Caplin Rous, who is owned by Melanie Typaldos, from Texas. If you would like to own one of these you would need a big garden and a swimming pool as they love outdoor space and swimming. They eat grass and drink fresh water.

The Sugar Glider

Another very strange pet to have is the Sugar Glider from Australia. This tiny animal is a part of the Possum family. They can weigh up to 85 grams and grow to about 17 cm in length. They are social animals; therefore it is a good idea to get more than one and bond with them from an early age. It is best to keep them in an enclosure with a lot of climbing space, always make sure that these enclosures are big enough. Their diet consists of cooked meat, vegetables, eggs, insects, leaves and raw nuts.

The Giant Cockroach

By far the strangest pet comes in at number three; the giant cockroach. It is true that people like having them as pets as they cannot fly and don’t bite either, therefore they are ‘child friendly’. Some even find the hissing sound they make cute. These Cockroaches like small living spaces and they like to climb. Be careful, as they can easily climb out of their enclosures. They like to eat vegetables and foods high in protein, and dog pellets have been recommended for them.
