The weather in the north east of England is so bad that the penguins at the marine sanctuary start taking antidepressants from the beginning of the year!

Stress Due to Bad Weather

Twelve Humboldt penguins from the coasts of Peru and Chile have shown signs of stress because of the bad weather. They stay inside the enclosures instead of swimming in the water, which is very unnatural for penguins.

A Long Period of Time

Although their natural habitats have similar weather in the winter, they are simply not accustomed to this type of weather for a long period of time.

It was therefore decided to give them antidepressants in their daily fish; these drugs should also help boost their weak immune systems.

“We hope they will realize they are not in danger. They know nothing of their treatment. The drugs are tiny tablets that don’t taste like anything.” Said Lyndsey Crawford.

The Humboldt Penguin

Humboldt penguins are endangered animals in their natural habitat, due to global warming, lack of recourses and the many rats that eat their eggs.
