We so often open a packet of food, see the cute look on our dog’s face, and think: Oh, a little bit of this won’t hurt. Unfortunately many of these foods are actually toxic to dogs, and it’s imperative that you know what is safe to give to your dog, and what isn’t.

Here is a list of some of the foods to avoid:

Chocolate

Many people are under the impression that chocolate is only bad for dogs due to its caffeine content. But chocolate also contains theobromine and theophylline, which can cause panting, vomiting, and diarrhea. It can also damage your dog’s heart and nervous systems. A definite no-no for your dog!

Grapes and raisins

Not many dog owners are aware of this, but grapes contain a toxin that can cause severe liver damage and kidney failure. There have been some instances of dogs dying from the smallest amount of grapes. Don’t risk it!

Macadamia nuts

Macadamia nuts contain a toxin that can result in weakness, panting, swollen limbs and termors. It can also damage your dog’s digestive, nervous and muscle systems.

Persimmons, peaches, and plums

Persimmon seeds and peach and plum pits can cause intestinal obstruction and enteritis. If your dog’s bowel movements increase, and you notice seeds or pits in their faeces, you’ll definitely have to make a plan about the plum tree in your garden!

Tobacco

Nicotine can damage your dog’s digestive and nervous systems, increase their heart rate and cause them to pass out. In other words, don’t leave your cigarettes lying around!

Xylitol

Xylitol is a sugar alcohol that is found in gum, sweets, baked goods and other sugar-substituted items. While these cause no harm to humans, it is extremely bad for dogs. A small amount is enough to cause low blood sugar, seizures or even death.

Yeast

Yeast rises in bread, so it makes sense that it’ll also expand and rise in your dog’s tummy. Mild cases can cause gas and discomfort, but too much can cause their stomachs to rupture.
