Chris Newsome had a visiting toad that came nearly every night to his house. So to honour his guest, and cheer up a little boy, he gave him a present... homemade hats!

A boy, his lost frog, a toad, and some hats

This story began when the son of 43-year-old Chris Newsome’s friend lost his frog. The little boy was obviously upset, and was in need of some comfort or distraction.

Around the same time, however, Chris started receiving visits from a toad that had taken up residence in his flowerbed. The toad would visit his front porch nearly every night.

So Chris decided to do something entertaining. He made his toad friend some hats to model so he could take pictures to make his friend's kid laugh.

Chris fashioned the hats out of foam paper, which he said deemed to be “toad-friendly material.”

What's more, the Fowler’s Toad didn't seem to mind trying on the different hats. “Even after many hats and pictures, he still returned,” Chris said. “Either he liked the hats or he couldn’t be fazed.”

"I would just place them on its head, and it would just sit there."

The hat-wearing toad became a viral sensation

The photos that started out as a way to cheer up a family friend quickly picked up steam. "I put some pictures of the toad with hats on Facebook to make him laugh,” said Chris.

He then posted the photos to reddit, where they garnered 1.1 million likes and many positive comments. Many were impressed with the simple act of kindness yet entertaining approach.

Others were less impressed, saying that Chris obviously had too much time on his hands. Chris refuted this, saying: "I spent no more than 10 minutes on each hat."

“Hopefully, it or another toad will visit [again] once the weather warms up,” Chris added.
