We all know that dogs have an incredible sense of smell, but did you know that their olfactory senses are 100 000 times more potent than a human’s?
Dogs can smell the most incredible stuff – here’s a list of things you probably didn’t know they can smell.
1. Cancer
Scientists have confirmed that dogs can smell cancer in its early stages, specifically lung and breast cancer.
2. Bedbugs
Bedbug-detecting dogs can save you from the stress of dealing with these awful little pests! Beagles are ideal for this – these pooches are trained to sniff out bedbugs.
3. Diabetes
Diabetes detection dogs are trained to smell blood glucose levels from their owner’s breath. Claire Moon, and her dog Magic are the perfect example of this beautiful relationship. It’s reported than Moon has helped her owner more than 800 times. Incredible!
4. Whale Poop
Whale feces is vital for scientists to study whales, but the issue is that it sinks 30 minutes after release – eek! Luckily there are dogs that have been trained to sniff it out from up to 1.6 miles away. That’s very far!
5. Pirated goods
There are dogs that have been trained to smell out the polycarbonates used to make DVDs, helping to stop bootlegging operations.
6. Emotions
From their ability to sense rises and drops in heart rate to being able to detect facial expressions – dogs can often understand our emotions better than we can!
7. Ovulation
Dogs can smell our emotions, so it makes sense that they can detect an elevated hormone count in urine too!
8. Missing persons
Sniffer dogs, or cadaver dogs are used in cases where people go missing. As sad as it is incredible, these dogs have the ability to bring the family of the deceased some closure.
