A very rare white squirrel was spotted in Marbury Country Park, Northwich, UK. Wildlife photographer, Andrew Fulton, was lucky enough to get a series of photos of this amazing animal.

The Pure White Squirrel

This squirrel is not an albino, but suffers from a condition called leucism, a gene mutation which causes the loss of pigmentation. This condition doesn’t turn the eyes red and doesn’t affect the animal’s eyesight. The squirrel is very normal, except for its white coat!

Extremely Rare Squirrel

Andrew said that this was the first time that he had seen a white squirrel and hoped that it wouldn’t be the last. There are about 5 million squirrels in the UK, and roughly one in a million is affected by this condition. These squirrels are so rare that you are very lucky if you see one.

“It took me a while to find the squirrel even though I knew there was one in the park due to word of mouth and other people reporting it. I was so lucky to see the squirrel! It isn’t albino but pure white so it was something very special,” said Andrew.

Simon P Unfortunately, because of its high visibility to predators, it has a very short life expectancy.
