A puppy becomes house-trained at four months on average, with extremes of 8 weeks to 8 months, or sometimes even 1 year.

If the problem persists despite a good teaching method, consider first of all asking a veterinarian about it. Indeed, it may be a physiological dysfunction such as urinary tract infection, cystitis, gastroenteritis or other polyuria (abundant urine elimination linked to various phenomena). That is why it is important to consult a professional.

Sometimes male dogs use urine as a marking for their puberty. It is easy to verify: your dog no longer urinates on the floor but on objects. In this case, castration is often recommended, but 20% of dogs continue after the intervention. You can then try anti-hormonal drugs prescribed by the vet, without guarantee of success.

If it is not a metabolic problem, the disorders are behavioral and can have different origins.

If you’ve adopted a dog who has spent time in a kennel or has always lived outside, it may be that he simply never was house trained. You will need to start the teaching process all over again, and be very patient. Finally, if uncleanness occurs in your absence, it may be a symptom of stress, frustration or anxiety. And you will have to teach your dog to get used to your absence.
