Rebel the cat didn't plan on taking an adventure on this particular day, but after resting peacefully on the roof of his owner's van, he suddenly found himself clinging on for dear life, speeding down the highway!

Despite his name, Rebel is not known for his rebellious behaviour. But some may have initially thought otherwise when they saw him surfing down the highway on the roof of his owner's vehicle. That is until they saw his terrified expression!

Cat filmed on roof of car on highway

Michelle Criger and her boyfriend jumped into their van and hit the road unaware their cat Rebel was asleep on the roof. Making their way onto an Omaha highway, the car was soon travelling at 96km/h.

Meanwhile, Ronda Rankin and her family were travelling not far behind Michelle and her boyfriend when the family noticed something atop the vehicle ahead. Unable to work it out initially, Ronda, a passenger in the back seat, pulled out her mobile to film at which point her daughter suddenly announced, "That's a cat!".

With Rebel now well and truly holding on for dear life, a frantic effort ensued to alert Michelle and her boyfriend of their extra passenger.

Ronda said she wound down her window and waved frantically at the car yelling, "Cat! There's a cat on your roof!". Her husband had his hand on the horn.

"There was nothing on that roof for that cat to hold on to. So I have no idea how it was staying up there," Ronda told KETV News.

Michelle and her boyfriend soon realised the horror of the situation and immediately slowed down to pull over while Ronda and her family continued on down the highway.

More fear than harm

With footage posted online, the video quickly went viral with people anxious to know the outcome of the story.

Michelle was eventually tracked down and recounted the story to KTNV News.

"Just before [Rankin's husband] came alongside me and started honking, I thought I heard a 'meow,' and I didn't say anything to my boyfriend because I'm thinking to myself, 'Why would I hear a 'meow'?".

According to Michelle, once they'd stopped the car and got Rebel off the roof of the van, he didn't appear to be scared. This was despite travelling more than 3kms from their home and video footage showing a clearly terrified Rebel during his ordeal.

"He wasn't shaking, heart racing, nothing. We were more scared than him," she exclaimed.

Michelle said she and her boyfriend were very grateful to Ronda and her family for saving their cat's life, adding that she will now check that Rebel is not napping on the roof before she drives off anywhere.

Moral of the story: always check on and around your vehicle before driving off!
