A new law is hopefully going to be proposed by municipal authorities in China, to allow blind people to take their guide dogs with them on public transport!

Ping Yall

When Beijing hosted the Paralympic Games in 2008, the Chinese public were moved by seeing Ping Yall, a famous champion in China, take part in the torch relay with her guide dog. It was a proud moment for her and her country!

During the Olympic and Paralympic games, there were many rules put in place to allow guide dogs in public transport, hotels and other public places. Ping and her dog, Lucky, were well received in all of these places, like the champions they are!

No Guide Dogs Allowed

When the games were finished, Beijing went back to its old habits unfortunately. Many hotels and public transport no longer accepted guide dogs like they had before, much to the disappointment of the blind and visually impaired. This made their lives very difficult, as you can imagine.

In the past 6 years, Ping Yall has been denied entry to the subway with her dog about 11 times! She has shared her experience on Welbo, which is the Chinese Twitter, and got a good response. The Chinese people were outraged at this and all questioned the justice in this policy.

There is a bill that states: Only livestock that are used in operations are prohibited in public transport… Then there is another that states: Qualified and well- trained guide dogs and other working dogs and assistants are not affected by this rule.

Chen Yan

Another example of this injustice is Chen Yan, who has a disability permit and a dog who has been registered as a guide dog. Despite this, she is also frequently denied access to subways and other public transport.

The biggest problem for them is that training a dog and registering them as guide dogs is very expensive. Many Chinese people cannot afford this training. Guide dogs are really very important for independence.

If this new law is successful, there will be many happy people, especially Ping Yall and Chen Yan!
