We are not the only ones catching colds! Indeed, dogs can also catch these winter sniffles.
Symptoms of colds in dogs
Dogs do not actually catch the same kind of cold as ours - they catch the kennel cough. But the symptoms are the same as our: fever, lack of appetite, coughing, sneezing...
The kennel cough is a minor disease. However, if you don't react rapidly, it can turn into pneumonia or bronchitis. These diseases are more serious and might be very dangerous to an elderly dog or a puppy.
Treatments for the kennel cough
If you notice any of these symptoms, consult your veterinarian. Most of the time, cough medicine will be enough to treat your dog.
At home, provide your dog with great recovering conditions: a comfy bed in a warm place and some quiet time.
If your dog doesn't eat much, try to re-heat their food in the microwave for a few seconds. Also, make sure they drink enough! Do not hesitate to use a syringe without needle to pour water directly in your dog's mouth.
Also, humans cannot catch a dog-cold, but other dogs and cats can! Make sure your dog doesn't transmit his kennel cough to his furry friends!
