Today, lets have a better look at a very popular breed: the Shih Tzu!

According to some legends, Shih Tzus are descendants of the Tibetan snow lion. Moreover, the name Shih Tzu means "lion-dog." The first Shih Tzu, was a cross between a Lhasa Apso and other small Chinese dogs, and was offered as a gift to Chinese emperors.

The Empress Cixi, a former concubine of the Chinese Emperor Xianfeng, fell in love with these dogs. Breeding was then located in the heart of the Forbidden City. In 1908, after the death of Cixi, the Shih Tzu were imported into Europe. They arrived in France in the 50s.

It is a small dog with a proud, small and elongated silhouette. Their head is round and large. Their legs are short and muscular. Despite their small size, the Shih Tzu is a sturdy and strong dog.

The Shih Tzu suits families with children as well as elderly. They are always cheerful and lively. Very intelligent, they do sometimes mess up! They are also a very expressive dog with a lot of attitude. Indeed, they know very well how to be understood when something does not suit them. They are even able to pout for a little while! However, they don't often.

This is a sociable dog that gets along with everyone. They are also quite independent, which will make them hard to train. However, they are very loyal to their owner.

Do not be fooled by its character and their quiet look: they need lots of exercise!

Obviously, they will need daily brushing and frequent grooming. Their eyes require permanent care, and need to be cleaned daily. You should know that this breed is particularly prone to ear infections.
