What are some nice stylish, affordable cat tree/condo?

I am adopting a 2 year old cat next Wednesday and my friend suggested I get a cat condo to give him (the cat) more space to hangout since I live in an apartment. I am not sure what to get. I've seen my friend's cat condo and it has carpet and rope around poles. It looks really bad because her cat scratched it a lot. Is there any cat condo or cat tree that can be maintained or should I just accept it for what it is?

Also, what is the standard price to pay for a cat condo? I've seen this really nice one on Tuft and Paw and it's like $1500!!! What should I be expecting to pay for a decent quality one and what should I look out for?
