If your dog has begun making backward sneezes or choking noises, there are several steps you can take to help. Ensure that your dog is not exposed to irritants such as dust, smoke, or strong odors, which can trigger these symptoms. Observing your dog for any signs of distress or underlying issues is also crucial. If the noises persist or are accompanied by other concerning symptoms, it would be wise to consult a veterinarian for a thorough examination and appropriate treatment.

Backward sneezing or choking
Tia started making backward sneezes or choking noises after her 2 birthday. I gently rub her throat to help her relax, but sometimes it lasts 1 to 2 min. The Vet does not seem concerned but Tia is stressed when this happens. Is there anything else I can do to help her.

I’m sorry to hear that Tia is experiencing these episodes—they can definitely be stressful to witness. It’s good that the vet isn’t worried, but if the sneezing or choking lasts for 1 to 2 minutes and causes her stress, you might want to try a few things:
- Keep her calm and relaxed, as you’re already doing by gently rubbing her throat.
- Make sure she’s in a comfortable, quiet environment when it happens.
- Sometimes, a small amount of water or offering a treat can help soothe her throat.
- Monitor if anything triggers the episodes (like excitement, allergens, or certain foods). If the episodes increase in frequency or intensity, or if you notice other symptoms like coughing, gagging, or difficulty breathing, definitely follow up with the vet. In some cases, backward sneezing can be related to allergies, nasal irritants, or mild throat inflammation that might require treatment. mr flip
