It is not who he is underneath, but what he does that defines him. Like Batman, 27-year-old Chris Van Dorn has been wearing his hero suit for a year now, rescuing pets from all over the U.S.

A real life hero

For the non-believers out there, Chris Van Dorn is living proof that heroes really do exist.

Since 2018, Chris has been rescuing animals from death row, criss-crossing the U.S. to deliver shelter pets to their new, forever homes. And all under the guise of the universally loved, honourable bat.

Chris first began volunteering at animal shelters in Orlando, Florida. After his own personal dog adoption experience, as well as witnessing the huge number of animals in need of new homes, Chris founded Batman4Paws. He wanted to raise awareness of and encourage pet adoption, and he would drive and/or use his flying skills to help make this happen.

Batman's inspiration

"As a child I looked up to the values that super heroes such as Batman reflected and thought that would be the perfect vessel to embody the spirit of goodwill. Thus the crazy idea of Batman4Paws was born," Chris says on his GoFundMe page.

"I would help rescue animals in need anyway I can, all while dressed as the Dark Knight himself and becoming a symbol for helping those in need."

Batman to the rescue

Chris receives his very special missions through social media or via his website. These requests include escorting a pet to its new home in Chris' very own (although slightly more discreet) 'Batmobile'.

Once a transport day is set and the fur friend has all their paperwork in order, Chris will collect and deliver the animal. Even though he prefers to stay within 800km from his own Gotham (Orlando), Chris has already traveled throughout the U.S. in his role, even as far as to Vermont and back.

As a pet hero, Chris currently volunteers from Monday to Wednesday. For the rest of the week, he returns to his secret cover and daily life, working just like the rest of us.

Chris is the hero these pets need and deserve. He's our hero too.

Well done Chris!
