We don't need to tell you how much we love a good news story. Everyday, we search for great people who go out of their way to help animals in need. Heather Connolly got in touch with us and we thought that we had to share her story!

Luis was found on the 13th of November in a bin in Romania by a lady called Elena, quite close to Bucharest. He had passed out and was dehydrated, so he had probably been left there for a few days before he was found. He had wounds on his lower body and once they managed to wake him up they realised he couldn't walk.  Elena then wrote a post on facebook with a video of him asking for help and Christina from the rescue PERROS DE LA LUZ organised for Luis to be transported to MEDIVET, a clinic in Bucharest.
Since being there he has had x-rays which have confirmed that he will most likely never walk again and he will be getting special wheels soon. He is very well in other aspects so he will be travelling to be with Heather at the end of January. She's very excited!

We caught up with Heather to learn more about this great human being and the lovely Luis.

Firstly, tell us how you came to meet Luis?

I am a part of a team of ladies, who help get dogs out of kill shelters in Romania. We have two ladies in Romania who take the dogs out for us, and I am in the UK so I organize most things online. We have taken out hundreds of dogs so far, into safe shelters and even raised money to build our own. We are planning to visit the shelters next year. There is a lady, Alina, who is a vet in a clinic Medivet. She has quite a few of our sick dogs in her care. That's how I first saw Luis. A lady named Elena found him in the street and could not provide for his care. She uploaded this video:  https://www.facebook.com/elena.onica.35/videos/763142150499079/
Christina Schmidt from German Rescue Perros De La Luz saw the video and arranged for him to go to Alina and also pay for his medical bills. Alina would give us updates on all our dogs and on Luis and I couldn't help but fall in love with him!

How are you hoping to help him?

Just by giving him the best life possible, so that he's happy and the most comfortable he can be. I raised funds to get him the best wheels to adjust as he grows so i will be buying them when he is about 6 months old. I will also be taking him to hydrotherapy sessions to make his joints more comfortable. These are very expensive - it is £200 for 10 sessions so I am currently trying to raise money for this, too.

Will he make it to full health?

Despite what has happened to him he is doing really well! He has been able to have his first vaccination since arriving at Medivet. He will never gain use of his rear legs but his overall health is very good at the moment.

How can we help?

I just want more awareness for him, and how bad Romania is for dogs. I would love for his page to be mentioned so we can get more people following his story, https://www.facebook.com/groups/531010160399660/

Please tell us about yourself, and how you became to love animals so much?

I am 23, living in the UK. I have always loved animals, and my favorite are elephants! I just cannot stand cruelty to animals in any form and I wish the UK would have stronger punishments for those who abuse animals.

Do you have any other pets?

I grew up always having pets, and so did my fiance. So it was inevitable when we got together that we would have a lot of them!
We have two guinea pigs, Napoleon and Wilbur, two rabbits, Rolo and Max, a love bird, Kiwi and another dog, from Romania! Named Fern, she was dumped also but luckily wasn't harmed. She is a very sweet dog.

Is there anything else we should know?

He was found in a bin left to die. He was dehydrated and his lower body was covered in wounds. If it wasn't for the kind lady who found him, Perros De La Luz and Alina, he would have died. He travels at the end of January and I can't wait!
