This heart-warming story is an example of a community coming together to help others in need. It is in fact not about humans, but the chimps in the Monarto Zoo in Australia.

Boon’s Birth

Soona, a 19-year-old chimp in the zoo, gave birth to a baby boy but unfortunately there were complications soon after she went into labour. She died due to a uterine abnormality and little Boon was left without a mother. Soona’s friend Zombi sat with her throughout her struggle and until she had passed on.

Zombi

The little one was not alone for long; a male named Gombe came to get him and looked after him for several hours. After, Zombi came to collect him and began to raise him as her own baby. Zombi is heavily pregnant and will soon have her own baby as well. Hopefully she will raise her own and Boon as twins. If not, the staff at the zoo are ready to step in.

Helping Others

Laura Hanley, senior primate keeper said: “I’m humbled from what we’ve seen from the Chimpanzee troop over the last few days. The unique situation certainly reinforces the strong bond our chimps share and the similarities these amazing creatures have with their closest living relatives, us.”

Little Boon seems to be doing very well, even though he had a rough start. The keepers can only praise Zombi as an amazing mom. She has truly cared for Boon as if he is her own!
