When your dog does something you don’t like, the first thing you want to do is discipline them. There is however a right way and a wrong way to do this!

The timing of the discipline is also very important; when you get this right from when your dog is a puppy you should have no problems with discipline! According to Humans For Dogs, these are the right procedures to follow.

It is a good idea to always say “no” in a firm voice before you discipline your dog. Once they are trained they will recognise this as a warning, and should stop what they were doing.

Distraction

Use any way you can to distract your dog while they are doing something you don’t like. A loud noise usually works well for example; yell, slap your hand on the table or shake something that will make a noise. Your dog should stop what they are doing and turn their attention to you.

Time- Out

This is the same as with children; if your dog has done something naughty in the house put them outside for a few minutes. If you were involved in the situation, for example playing with your dog, then stop playing with them for a few minutes. “Ignore” your dog during this time. Most dogs don’t like being alone, so this is punishment enough for them.

Use The Sit Command

When your dog is doing something you don’t like, command them to sit. This will also distract them from whatever they were doing to sit down. Always use a firm voice to let them know that you are not playing.

A Squirt Bottle/ Water Gun

Squirt your dog with water if they are doing something naughty. Use a firm voice when talking to them as they could think this is a game. Some people mix vinegar into the water to make it unpleasant.
