“The time has come to replace killing and violence with peaceful worship and celebration” - Chairman of the Gadhimai Temple

For over 300 generations, Hindu pilgrims of the Nepal Temple have sacrificed thousands of animals in the hope of a better life - but times are changing and the slaughters are officially banned from happening at the next festival taking place in 2019.

In 2009 an estimated 500 000 buffalo and countless other animals were killed in a traditional mass slaughtering, the numbers decreased drastically in 2014 when the Indian Government were reprimanded by the court to crunch down on the unlicensed export of animals from India to Nepal for the fest. This year the Ghadimai Temple Trust formally declared to end all animal sacrifice which is set be a momentous celebration of life.

Animal rights activists can pat themselves on the back as the Temple acknowledged their efforts which helped motivate the historical decision to be made, “We commend the temple committee but acknowledge that a huge task lies ahead of us in educating the public so that they are fully aware.” Said Gauri Laulekhi, a consultant for the Indian Office of Washington D.C – based at Humane Society International.
