The training exercises that we are about to describe all use positive reinforcement because we believe that is the best way to train a dog.

"No"

You can teach your dog the "no" command by rewarding them when they stop doing something wrong after you say "no". For example, if your dog is about to do something that they are not allowed to do, say "no". If your dog stops immediately, you can reward them. It's important to make sure that the reward is worth it! For example, if your dog was about to eat your food, you should adapt the reward accordingly and give your dog a treat.

You can also teach your dog the "no" command when you take away something pleasant. If you’re about to feed your dog and they are not behaving well, say "no" and take the food away.

"Sit"

Dogs typically get into a sitting position when they want something you have. Every time that your dog sits, say "sit" and reward them. By repeating this, you can train your dog to sit every time that you say "sit".

If your dog does not spontaneously sit, use a treat to try to get your dog to sit. Hold it above the back of their head. Your dog will try to reach it and raise their snout. When their bottom touches the floor, say "sit" and reward them.

"Lie down"

You can train your dog to understand the "lie down" command the same way as the « sit » command. When your dog lies down, say "lie down" and reward them.

You can also guide your dog with a treat hidden in your hand. First, have your dog smell your hand. Then, bring your hand to the floor until they lie down. Once they are lying down on the floor, say "lie down" and reward them.

"Stay"

To begin with, have your dog sit or lie down close to you. Then, take one step back and say "stay". If your dog doesn’t move, go back to them and reward them. It is important to reward your dog right away, otherwise they won’t associate the command with the reward. After, do this again, but taking two steps back instead. The next time you can take three step back, then four steps back, and so on.

Recall

This command shows a bond between you and your dog. To do successful recalls, your dog must come to you rather than continuing to do whatever they were doing. Closeness and trust are very important when it comes to teaching your dog this command. To teach this command, reward your dog every time that they come to you. Make sure that the way you call your dog is kind: use a friendly voice, clap your hands to get their attention, and maybe crouch down.
