Following the introduction of crash tests on the different ways to transport your pet in the car, the ADAC, German automobile club gives us a few tips.

To perform these tests, the ADAC used stuffed animals weighing the same as standard cats and dogs and made them endure the crash test at 50 km / h.

Results:

A dog lying on the back seat did not survive the accident and caused injuries to  the front passengers. Indeed, the weight of the dog during the impact is multiplied by 25 and therefore reaches the equivalent of 500 pounds.
Specialised safety belts for animals also had catastrophic results. They cannot withstand braking and therefore detach from the dog's collar. The animal is then propelled to the back of the front seat.

The transport cage, meanwhile, is only useful if it is well placed. Tying the cage with the seat belt in the rear seat is useless. However, if the cage is placed on the ground between two rows of seats or in the trunk against the rear seat, the animal will be safe and cause no injury to passengers. If it is a large animal in a transport cage, it is recommended to install a separation grid.

Many people travel with their pet by car, so beware ! Prepare for the worst case scenario.
