Do dogs need clothes in the winter?

Do dogs need clothes? Sure, dogs are equipped with their own heating system: their fur. But some of you might have noticed your dog shivering after being exposed to winter temperatures.

Does my dog need clothes?

Indeed some dogs are not genetically suited for the temperatures they've been transplanted to. So your dog may be as cold as you are if you went outside with no clothes on!  A sweater or a jacket might be a good idea if your dog is chilly or if you overheat your house.

The capacity of your dog to keep themselves warm will depend on its breed, size and age. Small dogs and toy breeds or dogs with short fur will need a sweater or a jacket to go outside.

Of course if your dog is old or sick, and has a weaker immune system, they will need an extra source for warmth that can be provided by clothes.

Big dogs with dense hair coats won't need any clothing. It may even become uncomfortable for them to wear clothes, and overheat them! Indeed their fur is already designed to protect them against cold temperatures.

For example, the Siberian Husky, Malamute, and Saint Bernard breeds are perfectly suited for cold temperatures. But the French Bulldog, Chihuahua, Greyhound and other pincher breeds will need a little help staying warm!

What cloth should I choose?

Keep in mind that you have to keep your pet warm, but also comfortable.

Wool, for example, will keep your pet very warm, but the itching may make them uncomfortable and it is a fabric you will need to wash often. So try a mix of washable wool and coton.

Be sure to measure your dogs neck, chest and waist before buying them clothes. You want it to fit so it will keep them warm and they won't lose it but it shouldn't be too tight and uncomfortable.

Be careful there isn't any parts your dog can chew off or swallow.
