Dustin Poirier is back in the octagon for a retirement bout this weekend, taking on Max Holloway for a third time
Dustin Poirier is entering the UFC octagon for the last time in this weekend’s UFC 318. His final bout will be against Max Holloway, whose UFC debut was against Poirier in 2012. Poirier won that first meeting by submission, and he beat Holloway again in 2019 by decision. Unlike most UFC numbered events, the Holloway vs. Poirier 3 headliner will be for the ceremonial BMF championship, held by Holloway, instead of a belt.

Holloway and Poirier were destined to dance again for the latter's retirement fight. In two previous bouts, Poirier has won by submission and unanimous decision in February 2012 and April 2019 respectively and Holloway has always wanted revenged. Now, the 33-year-old from Hawaii gets his chance to send the Diamond into retirement in the latter's native state of Louisiana.
Poirier (30-9-0) is fighting for the first time since losing to Islam Makhachev for the UFC Lightweight Championship in June 2024, while Holloway (26-8-0) is coming off an October 2024 defeat by Ilia Topuria for the UFC Featherweight Championship. Can Poirier end an 18-year career with a win, or does Holloway defend his BMF title?
The first time these two met was at UFC 143 in February 2012, when Poirier forced Holloway to tap out. Then, over seven years later at UFC 236, Poirier beat Holloway by unanimous decision to become the Interim Lightweight Champion, ending Holloway’s then 13-fight win streak.
Holloway, a former Featherweight champion, is looking to bounce back after losing to Illia Topuria by knockout at UFC 208 last October. He won the BMF title at UFC 300, knocking out Justin Gaethje. He has a career record of 26-8, with 12 wins coming by knockout.
Poirier, who is entering the final fight of his career, lost to Islam Makhachev for the Lightweight belt at UFC 302 last June. This is his second shot at the BMF belt, having lost to Gaethje at UFC 291 in July 2023. Poirier has a career record of 30-9 with 15 wins coming by knockout.
UFC 318 is set to deliver fireworks at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, as Louisiana native Dustin Poirier makes his final walk to the Octagon in a highly anticipated trilogy bout against Max Holloway with the BMF title on the line.
Poirier, a former interim lightweight champion, aims to close out his storied career with one last statement against Holloway, the reigning BMF champion. With legacy, pride, and a belt at stake, this main event has all the ingredients to become an instant classic.
